Fear of Fire Lighting Roman candles in effigy of all the ones who've wronged us. No place for me on your shelf -- I am a letter folded up in a drawer, worn by so many readings. The torn sweater in the back of the closet borrowed and kept from an acquaintance. We are drinking coffee by the Charles throwing dogwood petals in the water -- making wishes, concocting fables. The Inside Joke Laugh that laugh for me today that shakes your bones tosses your head back and sends you rolling to the floor. I'll leave my smile by the roadside for you so you can toss it around and not put it away until everyone has had a catch and your hearts are stretched from the filling. May you always lay down surrounded by the echoes of our laughter; May you always quickly find the warmest spot in the bed. One day soon I'll come tapping at your window. Maysong Your silence burns me as thin wooden matches who twist and curl as the flame takes them. I try to break through this fortress of separation, three thousand miles, and signals hitting off satellites. My voice is taken from me. The words I spoke to you all day in my mind in your absence suddenly scattered on the wind. Yet I remember I remember being curled up into you.
